Our friendly team

Haiyan Sun

My name is Haiyan Sun. I am originally from China. I lived in Germany for 8 years before coming to Canada in 1998. I was an international student learning German and preparing myself for university just like you are learning English to go to university now. I have had and can understand most of your challenges associated with studying and living in a foreign country. I am here to support you and listen to any concerns you may have. I am the founder of ALCC and one of the owners who works here full time. I have a bachelor of science in electronic engineering and a master of education degree. I love the ocean and helping young people with their education. Running a school in Halifax is a national choice for me-I am very close to the students and the coast. In my spare time I like travel and gardening.

Srini Pillay

Hello, my name is Srini Pillay. I am a graduate of Dalhousie University in Halifax with a Bachelor of Arts and an LLB. I started working with ALCC in September 2009 as an EAP instructor and became the manager of the school in June 2010. I have taught at Dalhousie Continuing Education and worked in Korea for three and a half years. I have also lectured at St Patrick's High School and the Halifax Grammar School, as well as being the debating coach at both schools for four years. I enjoy reading, travelling and eating all kinds of food. It is even more enjoyable for me to learn how to cook many different kinds of foods from all over the world.

Kris Barstow

Hello, my name is Kris Barstow. While a project manager at Nortel in Dallas, I moonlighted as a teacher of English at Berlitz. Subsequently I taught English at Quick Learning, a language school that focused on oral skills for business people, and at Randolph Community College in Asheboro, North Carolina. I have been at ALCC for several years, first as a teacher and currently as registrar. I enjoy writing small mathematical papers and playing around with music in Garageband.

Sebastian O'Malley

Hello! My name is Sebastian O'Malley. I have been teaching ESL for 11 years, and have taught in both Canada and Japan. I graduated from Saint Mary's University with a degree in linguistics, and also hold certificates in TESL and CELTA. My passion is both teaching and languages, so teaching ESL is my dream job, and one that I take great pride in doing! I love being involved with different cultures, and truly enjoy learning about where students come from. In my free time, I spend a lot of time with my wife and kids, do Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, play guitar and Irish tin whistle, and go out to the countryside. Although I was born on a farm in PEI, and have lived in Chile, the United States, and Japan, I will always call Halifax my home. Please come and talk to me, and teach me about where you're from!

Katie Higgins

Hi, my name is Katie Higgins. I am a graduate of Portland State University in Portland, Oregon, where I grew up. I began teaching at ALCC in 2015 where I have been teaching grammar and IELTS prep. I absolutely love teaching English and watching students succeed in their endeavors to learn it. I enjoy travelling, hiking and experiencing other cultures.

Patricia Buchanan

Hi Everyone! Allow me to introduce myself: My name is Patricia Buchanan. I have been here at ALCC for some years, teaching various levels, and have been involved in putting together programs for the EAP levels and the UBP. For the last few years I've been co-teaching the UBP but these days I am also teaching grammar as well as the UBP. In addition to my experience with ALCC and a number of other language schools in Canada, I've taught ESL in Germany, Greece and China. I was born in Nova Scotia, but have lived in Alberta and Ontario, as well as Scotland, where I went to secondary school and university. In 2000 I moved back to Nova Scotia, and Halifax has been my home until now. Since childhood, I've been fascinated by other cultures, and have had wonderful experiences exploring other countries and getting to know about different cultures from the endless variety of students in my classes. The greatest satisfaction that I get from my job is seeing the students succeed in reaching their goals.
